Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and qualified Cable Joiner (up to 400kV) to install, maintain, and repair high-voltage power cables for transmission and distribution networks. The role requires expertise in jointing, terminating, testing, and fault-finding on underground cables up to 400kV, ensuring safe and efficient electrical connectivity.

Key Responsibilities:

Cable Jointing & Termination:

  • Perform jointing, terminating, and splicing of high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) cables up to 400kV.
  • Carry out the installation of cable joints, terminations, sealing ends, and pre-molded accessories for a variety of cable types (XLPE, PILC, EPR, etc.).
  • Ensure proper cable preparation, dressing, and insulation work in compliance with manufacturer specifications.

Testing & Fault Diagnosis:

  • Conduct cable testing, diagnostics, and commissioning using specialized equipment such as VLF, pressure testing, and fault location tools.
  • Identify, locate, and repair cable faults to minimize downtime and disruptions to power supply.
  • Maintain accurate records of test results and provide detailed reports for project documentation.

Installation & Maintenance:

  • Work on cable pulling, routing, and laying in trenches, ducts, and tunnels, ensuring proper handling and alignment.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and inspections on HV cable networks, ensuring long-term reliability.
  • Adhere to cable bending radius, separation distances, and jointing techniques as per engineering standards.

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental regulations (HSE, CDM, RAMS) to ensure a risk-free work environment.
  • Carry out works in compliance with National Grid, DNO, and Transmission Operator standards.
  • Ensure correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to electrical safety protocols.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and risk assessments before commencing any jointing or termination works.

Team Collaboration & Documentation:

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, supervisors, and project managers to complete jobs on schedule.
  • Maintain detailed records of jointing works, test results, and site conditions.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior jointers and apprentices as required.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

Essential:

Recognized Cable Jointing Certification (DNO/National Grid/Private Networks)
EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) – HV/LV Authorisation
CSCS or ECS Card
Experience in HV/EHV cable jointing and termination (up to 400kV)
Thorough knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission systems
Understanding of cable fault-finding techniques and testing methods
Strong awareness of Health & Safety regulations, including PPE & RAMS

Desirable:

National Grid Competent Person (NG Persons/Competent Jointers Ticket)
Confined Space Training Certification
First Aid at Work
