Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Substation Wireman to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems within substations ranging from LV (Low Voltage) to EHV (Extra High Voltage) up to 400kV. The role involves wiring protection and control panels, installing switchgear, transformers, and cabling systems, as well as ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Installation & Wiring:

  • Install, terminate, and test wiring systems for control, protection, and metering panels.
  • Wire and connect switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, and relays.
  • Carry out busbar installations, earthing connections, and cable containment.
  • Ensure all electrical wiring conforms to project specifications and industry standards.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, circuit schematics, and wiring diagrams.

Maintenance & Testing:

  • Conduct routine inspection, testing, and fault diagnosis of substation equipment.
  • Perform continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, and secondary injection testing.
  • Carry out modifications and upgrades to existing wiring and protection systems.
  • Assist in commissioning new electrical installations within substations.

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with National Grid, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), and HSE safety standards.
  • Work under Permit-to-Work (PTW) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Follow LOLER & PUWER regulations when handling electrical components and tools.
  • Attend safety briefings, risk assessments, and toolbox talks before commencing work.

Cabling & Termination:

  • Carry out cable installation, dressing, glanding, and termination of power and control cables.
  • Work with low, medium, and high voltage cables (11kV, 33kV, 132kV, 400kV).
  • Ensure all terminations are completed to a high standard to prevent faults and failures.

Collaboration & Coordination:

  • Work closely with Commissioning Engineers, Protection Engineers, and Electrical Technicians.
  • Coordinate with civil and mechanical teams for cable routing and containment installation.
  • Provide technical support and mentoring to junior wiremen or apprentices.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

Essential:

CSCS/ECS Card (Electrical or Power Industry Related)
NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or Equivalent
Experience in Substation Wiring (LV, HV, and EHV up to 400kV)
Knowledge of Protection & Control Systems
Competency in Cable Glanding, Termination, and Testing
Understanding of Electrical Drawings & Wiring Schedules

Desirable:

BESC (Basic Electrical Safety Competence) & National Grid Person Certification
